Man in his twenties fatally stabbed outside Lambeth Town Hall while Lambeth Council votes down Motion to reduce youth crime

A man was fatally stabbed in Brixton while less than 200 yards away, Lambeth Council voted down a Motion to reduce youth crime in the borough.

Officers were called to the scene near Brixton Underground Station at around 8.18pm this evening (Wednesday July 21) and found a man in his early 20s suffering from a stab wound.

Paramedics from the London Ambulance Service and London Air Ambulance attended. They were unable to save the man, who was pronounced dead at around 8.45pm.

His next of kin has been informed and are being supported by officers.

At around the same time the stabbing occurred, Clapham Common Cllr Tim Briggs set out details of his proposal at the Lambeth Full Council meeting that an independent committee be established to reduce youth crime in Lambeth.

Shown in the attached clip from the meeting, which took place at the Lambeth Assembly Hall in Brixton less than 200 yards from where the stabbing occurred, the motion was voted down by Labour councillors who having the majority of seats, control the Council.

The clip does not make clear what the cause for amusement is during the votes against.

The Met said a man was arrested nearby on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm.

A crime scene remains in place and inquiries continue.
