Breaking news updates after a young man was shot dead in Balham

The man in his twenties who was fatally shot in Balham last night has been named as Matthias Poleon.

Matthias, 27, was shot in the garden outside his hostel on Bedford Hill in Balham just before 11pm yesterday (Thursday June 17).

Police and the London Ambulance Service were called to the residential address after passers by heard two gunshots at 10.48pm.

Matthias was rushed to hospital but died before midnight.

Friends and family members including his mother and cousin have appeared at the scene today (Friday June 18) to pay tribute to him.

Forensics have remained at the scene throughout the day and removed a car parked outside the hostel where the attack happened.

A spokesperson for the Met Police said: "Police were called at approximately 10.50pm on Thursday, 17 June to reports of a man suffering gunshot injuries in Bedford Hill, SW12.

"Officers and London Ambulance Service attended and the man, believed aged in his 20s, was taken to hospital for treatment; despite the best efforts of the emergency services he was pronounced dead at 11.36pm."

"Next of kin have been informed. A post-mortem examination will be scheduled in due course.

"Enquiries into the circumstances remain ongoing and there have been no arrests.

"At this early stage, anyone with information is asked to call police on 101 or tweet @MetCC and quote CAD8915/17June. Alternatively, you can contact the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111."
