Omnibus Theatre announces cast of upcoming play Small Change

Omnibus Theatre has announced the cast set to star in its upcoming Autumn revival of Peter Gill's Small Change

Set on the east side of Cardiff in the 1950s and 70s, Small Change centres around Gerard, a troubled man who nearing the end of his youth is still trapped by his past. As he relives his vibrant childhood, he grapples with what made him the man he now is.

Peter Gill's plays have been described as "one of British theatre's best-kept secrets" and Small Change is widely regarded as his finest. An intricate exploration of boyhood, the complex relationships between mothers and sons and the tragedy of wounds made by the things which go unsaid, praise for the play unanimously agrees it is a poetic, intoxicating masterpiece.

Returning to Omnibus Theatre to stage its timely revival is George Richmond-Scott. Having previously directed Blood Wedding in 2018, Small Change will be both his second play at the Clapham Common theatre as well as the launch of new not-for-profit production company Both Barrels Theatre, of which George Richmond-Scott is Artistic Director.

In productions, Both Barrels Theatre has said it: "wants to distil and reflect on what it means to be human and how we become the people we are.

"We will produce uplifting, provocative and insightful work that feels relevant today. Small Change's rich, poetic exploration of the human condition is the perfect piece to begin our journey."

George Richmond-Scott said of Gill's work: "I was drawn to his incredible vivid language and his gift for evoking place and childhood.

"At the heart of this play is a powerful examination of parent, child and love. It's a story that looks at how we deal with the past and old wounds in our quest for reconciliation and peace."

Small Change Cast Announced by Omnibus Theatre

Small Change was last performed in 2008 at the Donmar Warehouse with Matt Ryan and Luke Evans in the respective roles of Gerard and Vincent. Both shot to stardom, Ryan making what one review called an "impassioned Gerard".

Over a decade later and there is ample space for Sioned Jones, Tameka Mortimer, Andy Rush and Toby Gordon, the actors cast in this latest Small Change production, to paint their own strokes on characters played by different folk.
