Storm Eunice: Red Weather Warning issued for London

A red weather warning has been issued to include London ahead of what is predicted to be one of the worst storms the UK has faced in 30 years.

Storm Eunice is set to make landfall this morning (February 18), with gusts of over 60mph forecast for Clapham.

The Met Office upgraded its weather warning for London from amber to red shortly after 4am to reflect the track Storm Eunice is taking.

Flying debris "resulting in danger to life" is now expected in the capital, along with power cuts, travel disruption and damage to buildings.

Met Office Chief Meteorologist Paul Gundersen said: "The red warning areas indicate a significant danger to life as extremely strong winds provide the potential for damage to structures and flying debris.

"Although the most exposed coastal areas could see gusts in excess of 90mph, winds will remain notably strong further inland, with gusts of between 60-70mph for most within the amber warning area, and up to 80mph in a few places."

Red Weather Warning in London: all you need to know

The weather warning for London has been upgraded to red, but what does this mean on Friday when Storm Eunice hits?

A red weather warning, which will apply to London and the south east from 10am through to 3pm, carries a risk of winds that gusting up to 100mph could prove deadly.

Londoners have been told to expect flying debris "resulting in danger to life", as well as damage to buildings and homes.

Power cuts are expected as lines are brought down and mobile phone coverage could suffer.

Delays and cancellations to bus and train services around the capital are highly likely, the Met Office says.
