Covid-19 variant cases are rising fastest among 20-35 year-olds in Clapham
Wandsworth and Lambeth have reported two of the highest Covid-19 infection rates of London boroughs, according to the latest data released by Public Health England (PHE).
There were 398 new cases of coronavirus confirmed in Wandsworth in the seven days to June 15, a rise of 62 cases or 18.5% on the previous week's data. This means Wandsworth reported an infection rate of cases per 100,000 people of 120.7, the second highest infection rate in London.
Lambeth with 422 new Covid-19 cases and an infection rate of 129.4 cases per 100,000 people has reported the highest.
On Saturday (June 19), Lambeth Council said residents should continue to make use of free twice-weekly lateral flow tests as they revealed new infections were growing fastest among 20-35 year olds.
A spokesperson for Lambeth Council said: "Cases are particularly high in the 20-35 year old age group and we would particularly encourage people in this age range to get a PCR test as well as using regular rapid tests."
The previous day (Friday June 18), Wandsworth Council urged residents to continue Covid safety measures as they revealed that new infections were growing fastest among 18-30-year-olds.
"Coronavirus cases are still rising in Wandsworth – particularly amongst those aged 18-30. We are asking everyone to do what they can to help stop the spread of Coronavirus so we can avoid any further restrictions," a statement posted to the council website read.
"We all need to play our part by following social distancing rules, the rule of six, getting tested regularly and encouraging your social contacts to do the same.
"Please continue to wash your hands, wear a face covering, make space, and meet in fresh air. If you have to meet indoors, remember to keep the area well ventilated. Please take the vaccine as soon as you are offered it.
"If you are attending events or meeting up to watch the Euro 2021 matches, the rules still apply. Everyone needs to play a part in helping to stop the number of cases rising," it continued.
