Two sets of major road works begin in conjunction in Clapham Junction on Monday 28 June.

Wandsworth Council will carry out repairs on St John's Hill Bridge for ten weeks in a project to start on Monday (June 28), on the same day Transport for London (Tfl) begin a separate project at the Lavender Hill / Elspeth Road / Latchmere Road junction.

Tfl have warned the works on Lavender Hill are likely to last until October 4 with parts of the junction closed for resurfacing works in mid-September.

Wandsworth Council and Tfl have co-ordinated the projects "in order to minimise disruption and inconvenience for the travelling public", said a Council spokesperson.

Details of St John's Hill Bridge closure

  • Begin on Monday June 28
  • Anticipated to take 10 weeks to complete
  • Works include waterproofing, carriageway resurfacing and footway relaying
  • The bridge will be closed to vehicle traffic
  • Pedestrian access will be maintained
  • Cyclists must dismount to cross the bridge
  • Diversions in place for all 'through traffic'
  • Bus stops in St John's Hill between Falcon Road and Plough Road will be closed during the works and buses will be on diversion
  • Works carried out by the council's contractor, FM Conway, who can be contacted on 01732 600 700, or in an emergency on 07748 632 963

A spokesperson for Wandsworth Council said: "The council is to carry out vital repairs and strengthening upgrades to this road bridge over the railway tracks, which include waterproofing, carriageway resurfacing and footway relaying.

"The works are essential to ensure the continued structural integrity of the bridge."

Details of Transport for London's roadworks at the Lavender Hill / Elspeth Road / Latchmere Road junction

Begin on Monday June 28 and are likely to take up to 14 weeks to complete, the changes road users should anticipate include:

  • A 20mph speed limit along Elspeth Road including at the Lavender Hill / Latchmere Road / Elspeth Road junction.
  • Cycle segregation in the eastern arm of Lavender Hill with a two-stage right turn for cyclists from Lavender Hill onto Latchmere Road
  • Left turn movement from Lavender Hill into Elspeth Road banned except for cyclists
  • Dedicated left-turn lane replaced with a "footway build-out and green infrastructure and sustainable drainage system (SuDS)", which will shorten two pedestrian crossings
  • 'Ahead' lanes reduced from two to one in the eastern and western arms of Lavender Hill to remove merging on exit from the junction
  • All pedestrian crossings widened
  • Early release signal priority for cycles on the eastern and southern arms of the junction
  • Loading bay on the western arm of Lavender Hill relocated to remove a pinch point for cyclists
  • Parking bay on Latchmere Road removed
