Clapham independent Trude's Grocery has introduced refillable milk vending machine

It used to seem as if the scourge of single-use plastic was destined to feature in our modern lives forevermore.

But paper straws have become the norm and re-usable water bottles are seen as much as fashion accessories as they are an everyday necessity.

Trude's Grocery in Clapham has now taken steps to tackle the problem of plastic waste by installing a milk machine for customers to fill bottles themselves.

Milk on tap in Clapham

While milk vending machines have not yet made their way into supermarkets, they've been gaining traction among small, independent grocery shops over the last two years.

Designed and built by The Dorset Dairy Co, the 50 litre milk dispenser in Trude's is the fourth to be installed in South London, with one of the others just on the other side of Clapham Common in Spanish deli, café and greengrocer Tierra Verde on Webbs Road.

Buy a bottle once and milk it for all it's worth

Customers at Trude's can buy glass bottles in two sizes and refill locally grazed, unhomogenised whole milk from the station, delivered fresh from The Dorset Dairy Co farm.

The 1 litre glass bottle costs £1.50, and to refill it costs £1.50. The 500ml bottle costs £1 and is 75 pence to refill.

As a point of reference, in Sainsbury's a two pint carton of milk costs 80 pence, which equates to 70 pence per litre.

Trude's Grocery

One of the reasons that according to Vogue, Clapham is in vogue, Trude's Grocery has proven a welcome addition to The Pavement since it was opened by founder/Head Grocer, Alex Trude.

It delivers fresh seasonal produce and store cupboard essential to Clapham and the surrounding areas, but its shop is so worth paying a visit to.

Find Trude's at 10 The Pavement, barely a minute's walk from Clapham Common tube station.
