Clapham: Girl, 3, seriously injured by electric scooter in Lambeth park
Electric scooter crash in Lambeth leaves three-year-old girl hospitalised
Ministers are under pressure to crack down on electric scooter use today after a crash with one in Lambeth left a three-year-old girl hospitalised last night.
The crash, which happened in Lambeth's Myatt's Field Park around 8.30pm on Monday (July 20), is now under investigation by the Met's Serious Collision Investigation Unit. Police have appealed to the rider of the e-scooter and any witnesses to the crash to come forward
The infant was in the park with her family when she was struck by an e-scooter being driven by a young man, following which she was taken to a nearby hospital by her relatives.
"She is in a stable condition but her injuries have been assessed as life-changing.
"Her next of kin are being supported by specialist officers," a Met Police spokesperson said.
The incident will add to growing concerns over the use of electric scooters. Privately owned e-scooters have soared in popularity over the past year despite the fact they are illegal to use on public roads, pavements, cycle lanes and in parks.
Police believe the young man who controlled the e-scooter, and who was with a group of people including one on another e-scooter and another on a bicycle, stopped after the incident to apologise.
Detective Inspector Lucie Card said: "A little girl has been left in a serious condition after this collision and her family are, of course, very distressed.
"We have reason to believe that the e-scooter's rider stopped after the collision and apologised to the little girl's mother.
"It may be that they haven't realised the severity of the girl's injuries and thought she was OK.
"I am asking this person to please come forward and speak to us because we do need to understand what happened. I know it might feel a little overwhelming, but please do the right thing and call us or go to your nearest police station.
"We are also keen to hear from anyone in Myatt's Field Park around 20:30hrs last night. Please do get in touch with us if you witnessed what happened, or have information about the circumstances."
