Clapham petrol: Some fuel with less fire at forecourts today

Some fuel with no fire in Clapham this afternoon

The panic buying that threw fuel on the fire at petrol stations last week showed signs of having largely dissipated in Clapham today, with only a small queue for the Nightingale Lane petrol station at 5:20pm and no queue for the BP Londis petrol station on Clapham Common North Side at 5:50pm.

In Clapham South, the Sainsbury's petrol queue has been causing solid traffic on Nightingale Lane with the single lane road gridlocked from the petrol station to the tube station for much of Tuesday (September 28).

Between 5:20-5:40pm today (Thursday, September 30) there were only around three cars queuing for fuel at Sainsbury's.

Whilst drivers not looking to re-fuel were still stuck in the petrol station queue, traffic stretched no further than Alderbrook Road and it was safe for cars travelling eastbound towards the tube station to give way, further preventing a similar gridlock ensuing.

Across Clapham Common, the BP Londis petrol station that has instigated a £35 cap on fuel purchases had no queue at all at 5:50pm.

The UK Petroleum Industry Association seemed to confirm what we have been witnessing across Clapham. It said that demand on forecourts "appears to be stabilising" and that everyone should continue to buy their fuel as they usually would.

"Fuel is being regularly delivered to forecourts, as it has been since this increased consumer demand began last week, and we are hopeful that normal supplies at forecourts will be available across the country shortly."
