Clapham Nub News looks at proposed boundary changes

Will Clapham get a new MP under proposed boundary changes published today?

Major changes to the parliamentary constituencies of Streatham, Vauxhall and Dulwich & West Norwood have been proposed, with potential significant implications for our elected MPs.

Clapham and Brixton is one of two new constituencies allocated to London in the review of constituency boundaries announced by the boundary commission earlier today.

Carved out of three constituencies in the South Central and South West London region, the change will affect Bell Ribeiro-Addy, the MP for Streatham, Florence Eshalomi, the MP for Vauxhall, and Helen Hayes, who represents Dulwich & West Norwood.

Seats will be redrawn so they have, by law, between 69,724 and 77,062 registered voters in each constituency.

With all three seats easily held by Labour in the 2019 general election, the new Clapham and Brixton seat will be highly desirable amongst Labour members hoping to be its candidate in the next general election.

Boundary Commission Secretary Tim Bowden said that while the proposals announced today mark the first chance people will have to see what the new parliamentary map could look like, these are just "initial thoughts".

He said the Commission wants to hear the views of the public to "ensure that we get the new boundaries for parliamentary constituencies right".

The Commission added: "We are consulting on our initial proposals for an eight-week period, from 8 June 2021 to 2 August 2021.

"We encourage everyone to use this opportunity to help us shape the new constituencies – the more responses we receive, the more informed our decisions will be when considering whether to revise our proposals.

"Our consultation portal at www.bcereviews.org.uk has more information about our proposals and how to give us your views on them."
