New shop on Lavender Hill up-cycling furniture fated for landfill

Local News by Isabel Millett 8th Jan 2023

A furniture brand that specialises in up-cycling wooden items has opened a new shop on Lavender Hill.

Burnt Furniture began life in 2021 when founders Lee and Antonio, passionate about sustainable products and interior design, put this shared interest into practice with their expertise.

Using the ancient Japanese burning technique of Yakisugi - a popular method of wood preservation that makes furniture fire, water and insect repellant - creative director Lee takes items fated for landfill and, in a multi-step process involving a blow-torch, burns a new lease of life onto them.

Known in the West as Shou Sugi Ban, the effect of Yakisugi differs depending on the type of wood. On softwood, the technique emphasis the grain and develops a texture. Hardwood remains smooth and darkens.

Instead of a weekend trip to Smuggler's Way, visit Burnt Furniture at 125 Lavender Hill to discuss commissioning pieces and view the latest up cycled pieces completed.
