South London residents say their lives are being made a misery by a nightmare rental house that they claim attracts drug dealers and people who intimidate local kids.

One person linked to the home on Lewin Road in Streatham allegedly overdosed at the end of the street, a neighbour claimed at a Lambeth Council meeting on January 25.

Residents of the leafy suburban street say they've had to put up with antisocial behaviour from the property for 10 years. They claim ambulances turn up outside the property weekly and say they have witnessed begging, sexual threats and public urination linked to the house.

A neighbour, speaking on behalf of 60 local residents who are demanding action from Lambeth, told a council meeting last week: "This is a serious issue that needs to be dealt with urgently. Over nearly a decade we've been unfortunate enough to witness blatant drug dealing occurring down our road, drug dealers coming to our road, people addicted to drugs turning up late at night – including recently breaking a window.

"Daytime drinking and shouting, police raids, a knife attack needing two police vans, intimidation of children and teachers outside their nursery – including tonight before we left to come here. We've witnessed begging, public urination, sexual threats, someone od'd [overdosed] at the end of the road."

Speaking to the Local Democracy Reporting Service separately, local dad Karl – who did not wish to give his surname, said: "One of the guys who lives there started having a go at my six-year-old daughter when we walked by once. She wasn't talking about him, but he just went off at her.

"It's the worst in summer when they're hanging out in the front garden drinking. There's ambulances there every week.

The 58-year-old added: "We're all pretty fed up with it. I've been here nearly 10 years and it has been a problem pretty much since we moved here. There's no management of the property. They don't clean it up. There's no action when people living there aren't behaving in a responsible way."

Footage obtained by the Local Democracy Reporting Service shows some of the antisocial behaviour families say they have had to put up with.

In one video, a shirtless man swears at another person sitting on a wall in front of the house, before slamming a metal pole against the property next door several times. In another video, a man with a bike threatens to stab another man, before stopping in front of the house and making conversation with three individuals around the front garden.

Cllr Dr. Mahamed Hashi, Lambeth's cabinet member for safer communities, told the council meeting on January 25 that he was "confident" staff had enough evidence to refuse the renewal of the HMO [House in Multiple Occupancy] licence for the property.

He said this meant the number of tenants in the property "will significantly reduce in the near future."

Cllr Hashi added: "I'm extremely sympathetic to the plight of residents on Lewin Street and I've physically been down there, actually today, to see the problem first hand.

"I'm aware there's work currently being done by a number of departments in the council to address the issue further and give residents and the local community the peace of mind they deserve."

Streatham St. Leonard's local police said: "We are aware of the ongoing issues on Lewin Road and are working with our partners to address them. Over the last several months, we have executed numerous warrants and multiple criminal investigations are in progress.

"We are also assisting in the pursuit of several court orders, and conducting extra patrols in the area. Residents are asked to contact Streatham St. Leonard's Safer Neighbourhoods Team with any information, or to submit it via 101 or our website at met.police.uk."
