Amazon Fresh to open in Arding and Hobbs
The iconic Arding and Hobbs building, which sits moments away from Clapham Junction on Lavender Hill, is starting a new chapter.
After being left largely empty following the collapse of Debenhams, the department store will be given a new lease of life with a mixture of bars, restaurants and shops, as well as the upper levels being converted to offices.
TK Maxx will remain in its current ground-floor premises.
As a part of the regeneration Amazon Fresh will open a branch in one of the retail units.
Fans of Brixton's Canova Hall and Cattivo Bar will be pleased to know that the team (Albion & East) will be opening a new all-day brunch to bar spot on the corner entrance to the building.
The building is currently being renovated back to its 1920s glory by its owner and commercial property specialists W.RE following an extensive consultation with local people back in 2020.
Cabinet member for economic development, skills and employment, Cllr Rhodri Morgan, has welcomed the news. He said: "We have been impressed with W.RE's sensitivity to the history of this building, and their willingness to engage with local people on its future.
"We are looking forwarding to welcoming these new businesses and to seeing the Arding and Hobbs building busy again with local shoppers. It's a fantastic boost to the local economy and will bring life back to the heart of Clapham Junction."
Arding and Hobbs opened in 1884 and was one of London's first purpose-built department stores.
The refurbishment is due to finish this summer.
