Tuesday, February 28 - March 4: Book Club
Grab your wine, nibbles and notebooks and get ready to join Linda and her fellow "book clubbers" as they attempt to dissect the literary classics, over the course of 12 months.
This gentle comedy explores the idiosyncrasies of a group of random acquaintances brought together (through Linda's heavy persuasion) by their love (or mild interest) of books. As we move through different meetings, each covering an array of classic novels, free flowing wine, endless crisps and small pockets of insight into each character's life, we're left with the question: can this motley group of strangers actually become friends? And, what exactly is a cheese puff?
Thursday, February 23 - March 4: Merboy
The fantasy world of fairytale meets the dramatic yearnings of 1960s girl band music and the intense depths of gay shame in Merboy, a poetic and queer retelling of The Little Mermaid.
Using verse, storytelling and lip-synching, Merboy tells the story of a sexual awakening of mixed heritage queer boy navigating school homophobia and the brutal complexities of gay scene.
A musical chorus of drag sisters supports this fun romp into the true meaning behind Hans Christian Anderson's fairytale.
Thursday, February 23: Masterclass with David Butt Philip
Thursday, 23rd February will be the fifth time that David Butt Philip has hosted his Masterclass at St Paul's Opera, but the first time in his official capacity as our Patron. In the last year, David has made his debut at the New York Met singing Laertes in Brett Dean's Hamlet; at the Salzburg Festival in Katya Kabanova; and last autumn at Wiener Staatsoper, first with the role of Laca in Jenfa, followed by Stolzing in Keith Warner's new production of Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg.
This February, he will return to the Royal Opera House in the role of Prince for a new contemporary staging of Rusalka, then back at Wiener Staatsoper in April to sing Don Jose in Carmen. In June he will make his debut at San Francisco Opera in the role of Der Kaiser in Richard Strauss's Die Frau ohne Schatten.
Sunday, March 5: Murder Ballad!
A murder on social media where you become Hercule Poirot and join our online party for the big reveal.
In 1923 Agatha Christie perfected the murder mystery. In 2023 Hot Cousin will butcher it. Become a detective and piece together an online collage of clues over the course of the fortnight, ending in a big online messy gathering where the murderer is revealed.
This ode to Agatha Christie in a digital space exploits the short form nature of social media to serve daily doses of high camp crime. Loosely inspired by The Murder of Roger Ackroyd, Christie's own disappearance and true crime culture, Murder Ballad! asks; what can the internet bring to solving a mystery? How can we unite across the globe to become Hercule Poirot? And WHO THE BLOODY HELL DUNNIT?
