Clapham Caffeine Chronicles: Brickwood on Battersea Rise

By Isabel Millett 21st Sep 2021

First look around the latest branch of Brickwood on Battersea Rise

For the latest chapter in the Clapham Caffeine Chronicles we head across the Common over to Battersea Rise, following in the footsteps of Clapham café Brickwood.

Clapham has been in a long-distance relationship with Australia for decades. Wherever its genesis blossomed – perhaps around five miles south of the city centre of Adelaide in the suburb named, after this here town of ours, Clapham – this patch of south west London being a favourite enclave for Antipodeans to settle is no tightly guarded secret.

What has stayed a tad more under wraps are the hot spots around Clapham which, Aussie-founded, pull together all the things we love from the land down under (sun-drenched summers and seas filled with schools of dolphins notwithstanding).

Jayke Mangion is to thank for quite a few of these spots – Brickwood, for starters. Opened by Jayke in 2013, the first Brickwood on Clapham Common South Side gave South West London locals the closest thing to Melbourne's café culture and music scene they could reach without making a 16920-kilometre distance journey.

Branches of Brickwood have since popped up in Balham, Tooting, Streatham and now, to cover all bases for coffee addicts in the Clapham Common vicinity, Battersea Rise.

Announcing its official opening on August 19, a Brickwood spokesperson said: "This time last year we didn't even know we were going to survive so to be opening to Battersea locals is extra special!"

Battersea Rise is not short on aesthetically pleasing shop fronts for pavement pounders passing by to enjoy, but with doors flung open on its sea-green tiles and dusky rose-pink counter laden with croissants and chocolate muffins, Brickwood may just take the biscuit.

Dog, pram and laptop friendly with oat milk latte's you can write home about, congrats to Brickwood on bringing us more of the Aussie niche we all, Brit or Aussie, need.
