Clapham Spotted: Ducklings in Eagle Pond growing up fast

Clapham Nub News thought all the budding ornithologists in the Clapham Common area deserved an update on how the seven ducklings in Eagle Pond are getting on.

Local author, Julie Anderson, was on her morning run around Clapham Common when a last minute decision to change her usual route meant she spotted the newborn ducklings on their first ever paddle in Eagle Pond.

When Nub News stopped by yesterday, mum duck and dad duck seemed more than happy letting their brood sit less than a metre from where two young women were sunbathing on the small pontoon.

If not for a brief moment when the bark of a passing dog alarmed dad duck into protective mode, the family might have stayed sunbathing with Clapham residents until sunset. As it was, while dad duck quacked at the dog, mum duck herded their brood from dry land into Eagle pond.

The ducklings, collectively known as an incubation when in water, followed mum duck obediently.

Eagle Pond is a stone's throw from traffic, diners at The Rookery and the plethora of sporting activities Clapham Common grows abuzz with in the early evenings. It nevertheless remains remarkably secluded. From the handful of people who were by the pond, Nub News spoke to local resident Holly Medforth.

Holly told Nub News her flatmate had seen the ducklings last week.

She said: "When I mentioned I was meeting a friend at Pear Tree Cafe this evening she said I'd be cycling past a pond with all these baby ducks.

"I think I vaguely knew there was a pond here but I've never come across it and probably wouldn't go out of my way to find it. I highly doubt I'd have even seen these ducklings."

Holly added that she is not really a bird person but wanted to send her dad a photo.

"He was given a book about birds and got quite into ornithology over lockdown."

"This is an early Father's Day gesture."
