Clapham Breakfast Briefing: Wednesday, October 20

Clapham Breakfast Briefing is a daily column dedicated to morning 'must-knows' from around town and other useful tid bits: weather, traffic, travel and trivia news in a nutshell.

Clapham weather forecast

A cloudy morning won't linger long. Spells of sunshine could appear over Clapham as early as 9am, following which intermittent cloud cover will come and go throughout the day.

There is a chance we'll see rain arrive around midday, but it is likely to pass and leave a clear, sunny afternoon to enjoy before a pre-6pm sunset heralds an evening of rain, possibly with hail and gusty winds.

Clapham Traffic

Yesterday a traffic signal failure on Clapham High Street was logged at its junction with Bedford Road by Clapham North Station. Drivers are advised to approach with care.

Temporary traffic signals due to water main work on A3 Battersea Rise at B234 Spencer Park junction are causing congestion on the north-west end of Wandsworth Common.

Clapham Junction

There is a good, timely service operating through Clapham Junction.

Clapham Junction has begun six months of lift upgrades.

As a result there will be no step-free access at Platforms 1 and 2 until Friday, October 29.

The Northern Line

The Northern Line continues its undisrupted streak of good service.

For onwards travel, please note there is severe delays on the Bakerloo line between Harrow & Wealdstone and Stonebridge Park, plus minor delays on the rest of the line while a signal failure at Piccadilly Circus is fixed.

On the Metropolitan line, train cancellations have resulted in severe delays between Baker Street and Uxbridge.

Catch up on Clapham

Local residents oppose a new bar on Battersea Rise where existing venues already mean they encounter "vomit, urine and even human faeces" on an almost daily basis.

A teen has been arrested over the violent bike-jackings that have been keeping south west London cyclists from Richmond Park.

What's Happening in Clapham

Our top event pick of the week is the first Paint and Sip evening at Common Café.

Grab a friend and enjoy a glass of prosecco or wine while letting your creative juices flow.

Fact of the day

Humans are one of only two mammals who like spicy food. A study by Chinese researchers found the second, the tree shew, have a mutation in their ion channel receptor which makes the mammal less sensitive to the 'hot' chemical in chili peppers. They will happily eat corn pellets laced with capsaicin (the compounds that make peppers spicy), with other mammals avoid them.
