Event of the Week: London Zoo at the Bread and Roses Theatre

With a sold out opening night at the Bread and Roses Theatre yesterday, London Zoo is undoubtedly the hot ticket in town right now.

Written by Farine Clarke and directed by Samantha Pears, London Zoo is a pacey parody of life in the newspaper industry at the dawn of the millennium. Newspapers, which have remained comfortably profitable for centuries, are in crisis as the world falls in love with, and adopts, electronic media (hi there).

On what inspired her to write this play, Clarke said: "I've always been interested in the difference between what people say and what they really think."

A doctor who later worked in business at a senior level, in both the medical and corporate world Clarke witnessed situations where spoken words masked inner thoughts.

"We're sociable animals so brutal honesty can be damaging and hurtful," she said. "But when our 'harmless' words mask ingrained prejudice, then that's more sinister."

As for staging the production at The Bread and Roses Theatre, Clarke thinks both the theatre and its Clapham location are ideal.

"The B&R is a cutting-edge theatre which pushes boundaries and London Zoo is a contemporary play," she said. "It needs an audience an audience who is not afraid to be challenged or resistant to things being presented in a way that makes them question the status quo.

"There's an element of uniqueness about the theatre which I think will suit London Zoo very well," she added.

London Zoo runs at The Bread & Roses Theatre until September 11. Book tickets here while they still last.
