Clapham: Neighbouring Nine Elms very nearly in the Northern Line club

First glimpse of the Northern Line's newest stations in Nine Elms and Battersea Power Station

Residents in South London are "pretty excited" for two new Tube stations to open – but wish lines were extended even further.

It comes as the Northern line extension will open on September 20 at Battersea Power Station and Nine Elms – home to the famous Sky Pool.

The £1 billion transport investment has been over 10 years in the making and will run from Kennington station on the Charing Cross branch.

Mitch Edwards, a resident of Nine Elms told the Local Democracy Reporting Service: "I'm personally pretty excited, it's a nice connection to the city.

"My office is in Borough so it's going to be a nice easy commute that's for sure."

He explained that despite the Battersea Power Station and Nine Elms stops being near to one another, it is worth having both as there are a lot of people in both areas and new homes being built.

The 32-year-old added: "I think it definitely could have been looked into, extending the line to Clapham Junction.

"I think it would open up a whole connected system. I do know a lot of friends that live in that area."

Mitch added: "London seems to be continually growing so I think other transport networks need to be continually increasing."

Samuel Cole, a concierge at Lexington Gardens apartments in Nine Elms said: "I think it's quite convenient because a lot of the residents do ask about where the nearest station is and I think a lot of them find Vauxhall awkward to get to."

Vauxhall station is the nearest train and tube station to Nine Elms, which is around a 13 minute walk with several crossings to wait at before reaching the station.

The 28-year-old said he thinks a lot of staff who work in Nine Elms' shops, cafés, and apartments will benefit from the new tube station.

He also said it "would make sense" for the line to join to Clapham Junction.

Shane Connor, a resident who lives nearest to the Battersea Power Station tube station said: "I'm more all about getting to the Arsenal games, it's going to be easier to get to them."

He added the only thing he is worried about is more people walking past his house to the station and it being busy.

The 24-year-old said an extension to the line in Clapham Junction would have been quicker to get there instead of getting a 20 minute bus.

Local resident of Battersea, Sam Farouk said: "This is an area that's been regenerated and we are finally seeing results."

She would have liked the Northern Line to have been extended to Imperial Wharf and a stop in Vauxhall too.

Transport for London has been contacted to ask about an extension to Clapham Junction.

Sadiq Khan, Mayor of London, said: "The two new stations at Nine Elms and Battersea Power Station are the first new stations on the Northern line for 80 years.

"They will hugely improve connectivity between these two areas and the rest of London, and play a major part in the capital's recovery from the pandemic by supporting thousands of new jobs, homes and businesses."

Councillor Ravi Govindia, leader of Wandsworth Council, said: "This huge £1 billion transport investment to extend the Northern Line to Battersea Power Station and Nine Elms has been over 10 years in the making, so we are delighted that this growing Wandsworth neighbourhood is now firmly on the London Underground map."
