Clapham South: Cyclist in his 40s dies in Balham following crash with other biker
A cyclist in his 40s has died after a collision with another rider in Balham.
Emergency services rushed to the scene this morning on Balham High Street at around 8.20am and the man was taken to hospital while the road was closed in both directions.
The incident occurred at the junction with Bedford Hill and the man was rushed to a major trauma centre where he died shortly afterwards.
The police have said that the man had suffered a medical emergency and became ill.
A spokesperson said: "Officers were called by London Ambulance Service at 8.22am on Wednesday, October 6 to Balham High Road at the Junction with Bedford Hill.
"A man in his mid-40s was at the location suffering a medical emergency.
"He was taken to hospital where he died a short while later. His next of kin have been informed.
"At this early stage there appears to have been a collision between two cyclists before the man was taken ill.
"There are road closures in place while officers deal.
"Enquiries continue."
Prior to the announcement of the man's death, the London Ambulance Service (LAS) say that their medics were there within two minutes.
A spokesperson said: "We were called at 8.17am this morning to reports of a road traffic collision involving a cyclist on Balham High Road.
"We sent an ambulance crew, an incident response officer, a clinical team manager, and two medics in cars. The first of our medics were at the scene in two minutes.
"A man was treated at the scene and taken to a major trauma centre as a priority.
"The road was temporarily closed in both directions, however, it has now reopened as usual."
