Local fire crews tackle fatal house fire
A woman has died in a house fire on Railton Road in Lambeth. Four fire engines and around 25 firefighters were called to the blaze in nearby Brixton at 4:08am this morning (Monday, January 24). Two men fled the property before the Brigade arrived and did not sustain any injuries. Firefighters rescued a woman from the first floor of the two-storey house, but she died at the scene. Together the fire crews from Clapham, Peckham, West Norwood and Acton had the blaze under control by 5:03am. Half of the first floor was completely destroyed by the fire, which is now under investigation by the Brigade. A spokesperson for the London Fire Brigade said: "Sadly a woman has died in a house fire on Railton Road in Lambeth. "Firefighters tackled a fire at a mid-terraced, two-storey house where half of the first floor was completely destroyed by the fire. Fire crews wearing breathing apparatus rescued a woman from the first floor of the property, sadly she died at the scene. "Two men managed to leave the property before the Brigade arrived and did not sustain any injuries. "The Brigade was called at 0408 and four fire engines and around 25 firefighters attended, the fire was under control by 0503. Fire crews from Acton, Clapham, Peckham and West Norwood fire stations attended the scene. "The cause of the fire will be investigated by the Brigade."
