Local fire crews tackle house fire in under 20 minutes

Four fire engines and around 25 firefighters were called to a house fire in nearby Balham yesterday morning (Tuesday, October 19).

Fire crews from Clapham, Tooting and Brixton fire stations attended the scene on Thornton Road after receiving a call about the blaze at 11:10am.

The fire was under control less than twenty minutes later, minimising damage to the terraced house to part of the ground floor only.

Its occupants were not home and there were no reports of any injuries.

Sub Officer Glen Corbett, who was at the scene, said: "On arrival we could see smoke coming out of the window of the house.

"The residents were out at the time of the fire and crews worked quickly to search the building and bring the fire under control."

The cause of the Balham house fire is under investigation.
