Brutal brawl in Clapham Junction ASDA
Five people have been arrested after a brawl involving people dressed as superheroes broke out in Clapham Junction ASDA last night.
Police were called to the supermarket on Lavender Hill at around 10.40pm yesterday (Thursday July 22) and have said six people were injured, with one woman in her 20s taken to hospital.
Footage of the brutal fray in the supermarket near Clapham Junction station began circulating on social media early this morning.
Both men and women can be seen exchanging blows as they writhe on the floor among supermarket pallets.
In one clip a man dressed as Spiderman kicks a member of ASDA staff before punching her in the throat.
A man in a wheelchair is pulled away from someone he is punching on the ground below, while someone dressed in yellow beats a person on a pallet.
The man dressed as Spiderman is seen to clamber on the man dressed in yellow. Having acquired a crutch, he then clubs people nearby.
Five people arrested in connection with the incident remain in custody at a South London police station.
Two men, aged 37 and 35, have been arrested on suspicion of affray and violent disorder.
An 18-year-old woman and a 17-year-old girl have been detained on suspicion of the same offences.
A 31-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of actual bodily harm, grievous bodily harm, affray and violent disorder
A Met Police statement shared on Facebook added: "Police were called at 22:40hrs on Thursday, 22 July to reports of a group of people involved in a disturbance at a supermarket on Lavender Hill, SW11.
"Officers attended along with London Ambulance Service. A woman in her 20s was taken to hospital with a minor injury. A further five people were treated at the scene.
"Enquiries into the circumstances are ongoing."
An earlier tweet from Wandsworth Police said: "We are aware of videos on social media appearing to show a disturbance at a supermarket in Clapham last night.
"Five people have been arrested and remain in custody. Six people were injured. Enquiries are ongoing and we ask anyone with footage to share it with the Met."
An Asda spokesperson said: "We are aware of an incident which occurred at our Clapham Junction store late last night.
"We do not tolerate any form of violence or abuse towards colleague or customers and we are working closely with the police in their inquiries."
The GMB union said its members were among those attacked, and representatives were present at ASDA on Friday to offer support.
Senior organiser Mark Wilkinson said: "GMB cannot condemn strongly enough the actions of these people and we thank the police for their swift action in arriving to help protect our members from further harm.
"The video footage is absolutely horrifying and we are offering whatever support is necessary to any member who were affected during the incident."
He added: "Sadly, GMB is all too aware that whilst Clapham Junction is an extreme example, attacks on retail workers are on the increase. Parliament needs to act now to toughen the law."
