Latchmere Police warn of fraud scam

Local Police have warned residents about fraudulent activity in the area.

Latchmere Police announced on Twitter last night (Tuesday, November 30) that a scammer impersonating Police is targeting elderly and vulnerable people locally.

The scam involves a person who calls and, claiming to be a Detective from 'Serious Fraud Department stationed at a Police Station', indicates your bank account is involved in crime.

Trying to gain their target's trust, the scammer may provide reference numbers or confirm your address. This person asks you to call 999 immediately. If followed, this action directs you to another scammer who will ask for sensitive information that allows them to access your money. The Metropolitan police want to make clear that they will never phone a victim of fraud, nor will they ever ask for personal banking information. A spokesperson for Latchmere Police said: "Should Police need any other information it will be requested face to face where the officer would be in possession of a valid Police Warrant Card or in full uniform. "Police will NEVER phone a victim to inform them that they are a victim of fraud. "Police will NEVER ask for personal banking information." Police urge that should you be contacted by a scammer to hang up and call the police immediately, contacting them directly. They urge people to look out for friends, family and neighbours who may be vulnerable. Have a story local to Clapham you want to share with us?
