Residents label new tiny house on Marney Road 'ugly eyesore'

By Isabel Millett 13th Jan 2022

Local residents have objected to plans to build a three-storey-plus-roof-terrace house on a scrap of spare land at the end of Marney Road.

Featured in our most recent round-up of Clapham planning applications, Land to Rear of 14 Stormont Road is an off-street storage yard belonging to 2 Stormont Road but located on Marney Road.

Plans submitted to Wandsworth Council in November last year reveal how a one-bedroom property could be squeezed onto such an implausibly small plot - the land measures just 287 square metres.

By digging downwards to build a full basement as well as upwards, there is scope to fit a one-bedroom property with an overall indoor area of around 620 square metres.

But concerns voiced by residents could see the house raised to the ground before such a plan gets off it.

Among the objections submitted to Wandsworth Council, both Marney Road and Stormont Road residents said that if built the house will reduce their privacy, limit natural light into their homes and heap further pressure on already limited street parking.

"This will gravely affect the value of my property, it will block our view," said Ms Tasiaux, a Marney Road resident.

Her neighbour, Edward King, said: "Due to it's very close proximity we will lose our privacy into the front bedroom and loss of natural light particularly into the lower ground floor.

"In this instance the proposal is far too overbearing on neighbouring properties and I strongly object!"

Mr King also questioned the style and character of the building relative to the Edwardian houses on Marney Road.

"It is all one will see as they navigate the bend on Marney Road with a tall, modern build squeezed on to a piece of green garden in the name of profit seeking," he added.

Stormont Road resident Alex Forest agreed that in contrast to the surrounding style of housing it "would look out of step and an ugly eyesore".

The consultation period closed on January 5, however Stormont Road resident Emily Cockerill raised objections about such little notice being given to residents.

She said: "Given that notice of the planning application was sent on 15th December, I did not receive it prior to Christmas.

"Other affected parties may not have received similar notices in time to enable them to comment prior to 5th January. A number of residents will have temporarily left London to reduce the risk of Covid infection from the Omicron variant which was rising very sharply in mid-December.

"Particularly for flats that are rented out, owners may not have received the notices at all and will therefore lose the ability to comment on these plans."

Members of Wandsworth Council's planning committee are yet to discuss the application and comments may still be submitted by searching for Application 2021/5425 and selecting Make a comment.
