Local fire crews battle blaze at Battersea Nails & Beauty in Clapham Junction.
Battersea Nails & Beauty, a popular beauty salon on St John's Hill, is closed until further notice after a fire broke out from an electric fault in a nail lamp.
Four fire engines from local fire stations were called to the Clapham Junction beauty salon at 8:37pm on Sunday evening after residents in the flats above heard smoke alarms sounding.
Three people evacuated the building before the Brigade arrived, and around 25 firefighters from Clapham, Battersea, Wandsworth and Chelsea fire stations had the fire under control by 10:06pm.
The fire, believed to have been caused by an electrical fault in a nail lamp, damaged the ground floor of Battersea Nails & Beauty as well as the flats above the salon.
Nail lamps have become commonplace technology in beauty salons as gel nail manicures have risen in popularity. Unlike traditional nail polish which air-dries after application, gel nail polish is set dry by the nail lamp UV rays.
A London Fire Brigade spokesperson said: "This incident shows just how important it is to have working smoke alarms.
"Smoke alarms give the earliest possible warning when a fire starts, providing time to escape. We encourage everyone to have smoke alarms fitted in every room where a fire could start, plus a heat alarm in the kitchen. It's important to test them regularly."
Battersea Nails & Beauty, which has 4.5 stars on Treatwell and a loyal customer base around Clapham and Battersea, is closed to bookings until further notice.
