Clapham Uncommon: The blooming success of Clapham Common's wildflower beds
How much do you know about Clapham Common ?
Today we launch our new column, Clapham Uncommon. Devoted to all the secret treasures that if you know where to look, are hidden in plain sight around our town, Clapham Uncommon is for anyone who wants to celebrate the little things that make Clapham a special place to live, work or once upon a time have paid a fleeting, fondly remembered visit to.
Where else could we launch our column than on Clapham Common ? You might know it has ponds, you may know of its tennis courts. Northern line passengers will know it has a tube station. Runners will know if you skip any one of its corners, a lap is less than 5km.
Owing in large part to the dedication of community-led groups like The Clapham Society and the Clapham Common Management Advisory Committee (Clapham Common MAC) working in partnership with Lambeth Council, what could be a plain greenish space acceptable enough to walk across is instead bursting with wildlife.
Pictured here are the wildflower beds planted by Clapham Common MAC in 2018. More than a case in point for what people in the local community can create, we think they are the case in point.
Which is why we want YOU to contribute to Clapham Nub News.
